Black History Month is a period of reflection, one that can be as painful and solemn as memories of our nation's history—which must be told in all of its complexities to educate, inspire and heal—are relived. Despite the distressing historical realities faced by the Black community, Black History Month also gives us a platform to celebrate the contributions, triumphs and advancements in spite of adversity. It is a time to honor the many contributions both past and present.

Lezai Favors, a senior majoring in sociology, is projected to receive her BA in May 2022, then continue for an additional year in the Scholar Teacher Education Program (STEP) for her MA in Childhood Education.

For the fourth year in a row, Adelphi has won a top national award for its commitment to fostering diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI) on its campus.

As a teenager, Olivia Maybee, a senior, always had a passion for activism. She was born in Buffalo, New York, and grew up on the Cattaraugus territory, one of three territories that make up the Seneca Nation, located just south of Buffalo.

In the Spring 2021, Carolyn Springer, PhD, associate professor of psychology, was named the new director of the Center for African, Black and Caribbean Studies (CABCS). Here, she tells us how her background as a social psychologist applies to her new role, her upcoming plans for the center and future events we can all look forward to attending.

When Izabelle Pinzon, now a senior, came to Adelphi, she missed the diversity of her high school and having a place to meet, socialize and share East Asian cultures with other students.

Transgender Awareness Week runs from November 13 to November 19 this year and for the second consecutive year, Adelphi will hold events for the entire community.

Ern Knox ‘75 came to Adelphi first as a commuter student from Roosevelt, and later as a resident student, to study psychology. He found a strong community in the Alpha Phi Alpha fraternity, the first Black fraternity on Long Island, as a member of its second pledge class. SharRon McCoy-Knox, an aspiring nurse, commuted from Freeport. SharRon was actively involved in student life and had a role in establishing the first Black sorority at Adelphi, Alpha Kappa Alpha.

Adelphi's Muslim Student Association (MSA) offers a place for Muslim students from all backgrounds and cultures to embrace their faith, participate in activities and connect with one another.

National Coming Out Day is October 11 and, this year, 51±¬ÁÏ celebrated it with a series of events over several days.

The Equitable Adelphi Action Team was formed in the summer of 2020 to help create and sustain an inclusive campus community. Formed by the Division of Student Affairs, the team consists of faculty members, administrators and students. Now is a great time for students to join and use their voices to bring forth change on campus.

This fall, we are joined by 22 new faculty members spanning all our schools and colleges and our University Libraries. Our mission to transform lives is enriched by their unique expertise and contributions.

This fall, Adelphi welcomes a landmark first-year class. A record 1,330 new students joined our Panther family, from 34 states and 23 countries. More than 300 transfers and 820 graduate students are continuing their academic journey with us this fall in our eight world-class colleges and schools. And we are joined on campus this year by 30 of our first community college students through our innovative Nassau-Adelphi Gateway program.

Leading our "Many Voices. One Adelphi." message is the renowned poet and our Vice President of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Jacqueline Jones LaMon, JD. Her welcome-back-to-campus campaign features banners across our main campus highlighting the diversity of our student-led organizations. They promote our vibrant and engaged community and the voices and experiences of all our students.

In recognition of Adelphi's dedication to diversity, equity and inclusion, the University has earned the 2021 INSIGHT Into Diversity Higher Education Excellence in Diversity (HEED) Award for the fourth year in a row.

The path to earning a bachelor's degree doesn't always run smoothly. Sometimes students are sidelined by personal responsibilities, or they have a change of heart or a career opportunity.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, but for the Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program, there's no rest in the battle against breast cancer, and supporting patients, survivors and families is a year-round effort.

Now in her senior year, Mercedes Spanoudakis, a business management major, tells us how she feels about returning to campus, how student leaders can help, some favorite memories and a very special plant.

When Carlos Ventura, now a senior majoring in biochemistry, first came to Adelphi in Fall 2018, the first-generation college student attended a meeting of the Latino Student Association (LSA) and immediately connected with the members of the group. He has called LSA his home away from home ever since.

For her senior thesis, physics major Gabriella (Gabi) Vidad '21 used remote sensing and widely available resources such as Google Earth to chart the severity of coral reef changes in the Philippines.

For the second year in a row, the Hispanic Community Partnership Program (HCPP) was held virtually. Here, Charlene Mayers, executive assistant in the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion, tells us how being virtual opened doors to students who would not have been able to attend in person.
